Original Title “Freedom In The Mind”.
When I hear songs that sing about being free, or chains being broken, I can’t help but smile because I understand what it is like to be held hostage in sin. With that said, I also know how it feels to be set free.
Freedom: the state of being free or at liberty, rather than in confinement or under physical restraint.
There are many things that can hold us hostage, make us feel like a prisoner, or create a feeling of being tied down. One example is our thoughts. “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he”. Proverbs 23:7. I believe our mind is a very powerful tool. A human thought is often underestimated, but there is great power in the mind.
Romans 8:5-6 says, “Those who are dominated by the sinful nature THINK about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit THINK about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your MIND leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your MIND leads to life and peace.” This means that if we live by God’s Spirit and renew our thoughts daily with positivity and meditating on his word, in return we will gain a peaceful life. However, if we live by our flesh and give in to negativity and toxic ways of thinking, it will only lead to a life of conflict.
Lately I’ve been in a battle with my thoughts. Negativity had consumed my mind and I felt trapped. My joy was gone, my patience was low, and my peace of mind was nowhere to be found. People may not know your thought processes, but understand that it will eventually show in your actions. I would worship Sunday morning and be in a peaceful place, but once church was over, it felt like Satan was at the door waiting for me to hand over my freedom, joy, and my desire to live by the Spirit. So he took it, (I handed to him, rather). I was left angry, annoyed, and frustrated. One of the worst things you can do is give away something that is priceless. I wanted back what was mine; what was given to me on the cross. It was too tiring and no fun being weighed down by these negative emotions.
In 2 Peter 2:19, it says “For you are a slave to whatever controls you.” I refuse to be a slave to sin, depression, anger, lust, hate, etc. Instead, I want the Holy Spirit to be in control. I would rather be a slave to God than Satan. In serving God and living by His Spirit, I will have love, joy and peace. And I know that God will work everything out for my good, no matter the circumstance.

Galatians 5:15 says, “For you have been called to live in freedom.”
You are not called to live in darkness, shame or guilt. Yes, those feelings can and will come to overwhelm you, but you are chosen to live a lifestyle of freedom.
John 8:36 says, “Whom the son sets free is free indeed.” No matter what is holding you in captivity, know that Jesus Christ can set you free.
Father I pray for whoever reads this, that they be set free from the sin that is holding them hostage. Father I speak this with authority and love, that you will give them peace of mind, help them to acknowledge the Holy Spirit as comfort them, and that you will give them strength to overcome their weaknesses. Remind them of your faithful, unconditional love. Grant them the boldness to confess their sins and to be healed, in Jesus’ mighty name I pray, Amen.
